American Indian Week at Conehatta

   

     

 

            American Indian Week activities at Conehatta Elementary School were planned for students, parents, the community, and staff. These activities included Choctaw dances by the elderly with students and staff participating; Choctaw stories told by Rosalie Steve; drumming and singing by Southern Pines and Caney Creek (lead singers Dan Isaac and Gary Williamson); dancing by Joe Isaac, Robert Farmer, and Simon Isaac and Conehatta students Emily L. Shoemake, Kambree Chickaway, and Katelyn Shoemake who performed the butterfly dance;  washer throw competitions among the staff; movies about Native Americans; and stickball games among junior high teams.  Students were also shown “Okchalechi,” a Choctaw Tribal Language DVD.  Students were encouraged to speak the Choctaw words and participate in the motions and songs.  On Thursday a traditional meal that included fried chicken, dressing and gravy, hominy, green beans, fry bread, and banana pudding was served by the cafeteria staff.  On Wednesday and Thursday, Princess and Brave Pageants and Dress Revues were held for students in grades Pre-K-8
